8 Ideas to Teach Weather to Preschoolers

Start a Weather Predictor Chart

With a few pieces of construction paper, you can help your child learn how to predict the weather. Of course, weather can be super unpredictable, but that is the fun part about working with your preschooler and teaching them about the weather. Your child gets to decide what they think the weather will be this week and that’s really cool.

This is a great way to get your children actively involved with learning about weather in a natural way because they have to pay attention to the weather each day to be able to compare it to their predictions!

Explore All Weather Types

It’s easy to look at the weather from inside. What if you actually went out and explored the weather? This is such a cool way to teach preschoolers about the weather. They get to use all five of their senses to actively explore all kinds of weather!

It doesn’t matter if it’s snow, rain, sun, cloudy, windy, hot, or cold, – preschoolers will love experiencing what they see, hear, feel, think, and taste.

Weather Journal

Children are never too young to draw. While it may be hard to decipher what they are drawing, this is such a natural way to teach preschoolers about the weather. A weather journal is simply a bunch of pieces of paper stapled together.

Each day, your toddler records the weather that they saw or experienced. Don’t try and correct them. You can guide them, but for the most part, this should be an activity that they do on their own. It’s so much fun to see what they record.

Listening for Sounds

Weather can tell us a lot. If you don’t have a chance to go outside and explore the weather, you can always listen. If it is windy out or there is a thunderstorm, these are two very good ways to teach weather to preschoolers. You can always throw in fun facts about thunder, lightning, and wind.

Create a Weather Viewing Space

Another fun and natural way to teach your preschooler about the weather is to create a weather viewing space. This is where your preschooler can clearly look outside and see what is going on with the weather.

This station is where your preschooler will go every single day to report to you the weather. Creating a special space to do a specific task can make learning more interesting!

And don’t worry, when they’re excited about what they’re learning they won’t forget the task ahead of them. They will remind you every single day to visit that spot to complete their task!

Describe the Weather to Your Preschooler

As much as some preschoolers are visual, some need to hear you talk about the weather., they need to hear you describe it to them. Using descriptive words is great for introducing subject-oriented vocabulary. So, when we make teaching the weather relatable and understandable, it will be more exciting!

If you need some ideas, think about what a sunny day may look like, feel like, or do? What does a rainy day look like, feel like, or do? Make sure you are talking to your preschooler and describing the weather to them. If you need to, pull out the dictionary and a good thesaurus!

Listen to Songs About Weather

Incorporating music is a great way to teach weather to preschoolers! A simple Google or YouTube search will bring up quite a few super creative songs that sing about the weather. When you’re on a walk or doing an activity, turn on some music about the weather.

In no time, your preschooler will start singing about the weather and it’ll be the cutest thing ever! If your toddler or early-learning student is really into the song activities, try and encourage them to come up with a few songs by themselves!
