What are task cards?

In short, task cards are a set of cards that have questions (or tasks) on them for children to complete. These are often seen as innovative ways for teaching independent learning skills while reiterating old concepts taught. Task cards are a great replacement to flashcards, worksheets, and posters. Depending on the topic you’re teaching, you can find task cards for just about any subject. In this case, we’ll look at using task cards for teaching shapes to preschoolers.

How to Use Task Cards

If you’re a homeschooling mom of multiples like me, adding task cards into your homeschool routine can be a stress saver. There are many ways to use task cards, but for starters let’s talk about using them individually. As I mentioned before, these help with fostering the skills needed for independent learning. Set aside a time for your child to work alone and give them the task cards to complete.

If they are unable to read fluently, then working together with your child would be ideal. If you have older kids, they can also help by working one-on-one with their sibling. Task cards can also be used to play games, especially if you have multiple kids around the same age. Have your kids draw a card and see how fast they can draw or build the shape, do it with their eyes closed (which is super funny), or try the task with their less dominant hand.

Shapes Task Cards

Teaching shapes to preschoolers is easy with the shapes task cards pack I created with little busy building kids in mind. If you have little ones that like to build, then these task cards will be perfect. There are three different types of task cards for kids in this set:

  • Simple task cards with shapes on them.
  • Sequencing cards.
  • More advanced task cards with no shapes.

When using these, give your kids paper, pencils, crayons, play doh, or anything they can use to draw and/or build. The more the merrier! Overall, these cards are meant to help you just as much as your kids. Use them to transition into other parts of your homeschool day, independent play, or together time.

The simple cards are perfect for kids who are just learning their shapes as it gives them a hint of what shape they need to draw or build. The sequencing task cards raise the bar a bit by inviting kids to draw or build the shape that comes next in the pattern. Slightly older children will find the advanced cards more challenging as they only have the task on them and not the shapes. This is a great way to keep building their confidence and improve their skills while you’re teaching shapes to preschoolers.
